Creating Your Breastfeeding Support Tribe

If there’s one thing every nursing mom can agree on, it’s that breastfeeding isn’t easy. Having a breastfeeding support tribe that you surround yourself with, particularly in the early days, is a critical part of having a successful breastfeeding journey.

Your tribe might look different than others. That’s ok. The most important thing is that you find people who can help you navigate breastfeeding in the least stressful way possible.

Your Spouse

Your spouse should be your first line of defense when it comes to creating the best journey possible. Tell him what you need. Ask for help creating snacks. And if you’re going to be exclusively pumping show him how to sanitize your pump parts and store milk. Every little bit helps and as a newbie, your spouse is going to need some direction.

Postpartum Doula

The postpartum doula is a fabulous option for moms who have spouses who have to immediately return to work or are even away due to circumstances out of their control (military deployments, etc.).

Postpartum doulas are skilled in not just breastfeeding, but also in newborn care and mother postpartum care.

Even if you have a fully supportive spouse at home, a postpartum doula can help if you had a complicated birth and need extra care or if you have twins.

Lactation Consultant

IBCLC lactation consultants are worth their weight in gold. These professionals bring a deep understanding of breastfeeding—both the science behind it and the importance it plays for both mom and baby.

Lactation consultants can help you navigate issues like baby not latching, lip or tongue ties, and other issues that breastfeeding moms encounter.

Whether you rely on family or professionals, it’s important that you take the time to create your tribe. You won’t regret having a group of people around you who all have the best interest of you and your baby in mind.

If you’re a breastfeeding mom in Washington D.C. or Maryland and need an insurance covered breastpump, contact us. We can help you find the best option for your needs and ensure you’ve got the information needed to make the best decision for you and your baby.
